Starting With Surrender

Although the journey starts when a person walks into their first meeting, the real recovery begins when the decision is made to «let go» and allow a greater power to take over. The twelve steps of the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) recovery program is the spiritual foundation for personal recovery, used not only by people with an alcohol use disorder (AUD) but by their friends and family in Al-Anon and Alateen programs. People who have embraced the twelve step manifesto have found that it not only provides them the means to stop drinking but offers them a structural framework by which to live a productive and fulfilling life. We let our Higher Power shape our ideals, and we recognize that each of us will have a different vision for what sane and healthy technology use looks like. Broadly, we seek to use internet and technology in service of a higher purpose or goal, and to let go of use that is purposeless or excessive, or that occurs at inappropriate times (such as during a conversation, or late at night).

We can also ask other members for help in coming up with ideas to add to our list. Examples might include singing, spending time with friends and family, going into nature, napping, taking a class, exercising, recovery meetings, live music, volunteering, a fulfilling career, etc. Additional examples can be found in Appendix D at the bottom of this document. Again on the one side, grandiosity claims there is nothing it cannot master and control; on the other side, the facts demonstrate unmistakably the opposite.

You can also ask the payer to withhold an additional amount using Form W-4R. The part of any loan treated as a distribution (except an offset amount to repay the loan), explained later, is subject to withholding under this rule. Box 8 of Form 1099-R shows that the current actuarial value of the annuity was $10,000. A defined contribution plan is a plan in which you have an individual account. Your benefits are based only on the amount contributed to the account and the income, gains or losses, etc., which may be allocated to that account. Under a defined contribution plan, your contributions (and income allocable to those contributions) may be treated as a separate contract for figuring the taxable part of any distribution.

If an eligible rollover distribution is paid to you, the payer must withhold 20% of it. This applies even if you plan to roll over the distribution to another qualified retirement plan or to an IRA. The NUA in employer securities (box 6 of Form 1099-R) received as part of a lump-sum distribution is generally tax free until you sell or exchange the securities.
